The January DAPS monthly General Membership Meeting is January 14th, 1 PM at the University Park United Methodist Church. The meeting will be held in the ACTIVITY CENTER-- please note the room change this month. Light snack provided.
Our speaker will be: DeLila Bergan, JD, MA
Topic: "Making YOUR Goals a Priority for Your Doctors"
Ms. Bergan is an elder mediator, bioethicist and retired elder law attorney. She earned her law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and practiced as an elder law attorney for many years. She later obtained a Master's degree in bioethics and health care policy from Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. She now serves older, ill and disabled adults; family caregiver; long-term care providers and other sention care professionals through a blend of elder mediation techniques and medical ethical consultations, training and policy development.
Ms. Bergan ~ We want patients to be able to communicate what is important to them and we want doctors and other health care professionals to take notice. That involves the patient asking about and thinking through options; clear discussions between the patient and family and doctors; good advance directives; appoitnment of a trustworthy agent under a health care POA; and asking for help from the ethics committee or ethics consultants if doctors and patients cannot agree on how to proceed.
